My first show as a director happened in 1996 with a simple one-act, two hander – Graceland, by Ellen Byron. So you’d think I’d ease my way into the second one? Not so much – it was Michael Frayn’s Noises Off. Hubris? Sure. Inexperience? Absolutely. But I loved every second of it.
More importantly, I learned early that while the director is the one calling the shots, a truly effective leader engages the very best talent, behind the scenes and on stage alike, and lets them shine. This leads to effective collaboration and teamwork, and ultimately, productions that audiences remember for years afterward.
